Using BHT to prevent cold sores

I'm sure most of you viewing this blog have come across claims that cold sores / herpes can be prevented or maybe even cured by using BHT. That is what I have set out to do with this blog, to hopefully prove that BHT can be effectively used to treat cold sores, in an impartial and honest manner.

I am 23 years old and have been suffering from cold sores from around the age of 7, and up until about 2 years ago, I would only get outbreaks around 3 times a year, 1 blister at a time. This year I have had over 7 outbreaks already, but I'm sure work stress and bad diet are contributing to this. I have had enough! I have become so paranoid with every little tingly or itch that I feel on my lips, which is probably fueling my outbreaks even more! I'm sick of applying copious amounts of Activir cream, ice and drying my cold sores out with hydrogen peroxide. Hence I need to try something different.

What I aim to do with this blog
I came across BHT being used to treat cold sores / herpes a while ago, and although not many trials have been done on humans, it does look promising. I am therefore going to be my own guinea pig and yours and will be documenting on my blog the effectiveness of BHT in controlling my cold sore outbreaks. During this time I will not be using any other supplements or drugs like L-Lysine, Indol-3-Carbinol, I want to see how effective BHT is on its own. I have also never taken any prescription medicine to treat my outbreaks. After a while (if I get positive results), I want to experiment and try to induce an outbreak by doing everything that I shouldn't such as eating foods high in arginine, more sun exposure without SPF, and drinking lots of artificially sweetened sodas!

Dosage of BHT
I've only just started my experiment two days ago, I've started on 350mg per day taken in the morning after breakfast. I'm delighted to say, no side effects yet :P I will be continuing this for the next three months noting any outbreaks and side effects that might occur. I know it's been mentioned that you need to take over 1000mg's a day to "cure" yourself of this awful virus, but for the time being I want to see if I can eliminate outbreaks on the minimum dosage. I will also be going for regular check ups with my GP, and be getting liver function tests done to check that I'm not doing any adverse harm to myself.

I will be posting my results often, so check back soon! Anyone that's had any experience with BHT please contact me.

I have just ordered BHT and will begin taking 250 mg per day for starts to fight and hopefully eliminate HSV2. I am using it in conjunction with ozone therapy and will report my findings as I go along. Feel free to write me if you are using BHT so we can swap findings. Best of luck!

I've been taking BHT with Acyclovir for 3.5 months now, no outbreaks. Don't quite know which one is working though.. :) But I will be stopping Acyclovir eventually, and BHT apparently can be taken forever. So we'll see. No side effects yet.

Good to hear you've been clear for over 3 months! I know that might not seem like much to others but, I haven't been with out an outbreak longer then two months for a long time now!

Hope all goes well when you stop taking Acyclovir!

If you are taking BHT don't take antivirals they can mutate and cause BHT to be ineffective against HSV.

Furthermore anitvirals such as acyclovir will eventually cause herpres to mutate and ultimately be ineffective as well. Acyclovir and antiviral are not a cure just simply interrupt moderately selectively chemical processes that the herpes virus needs to replicate and survive.

Antivrals also effect other cells in your body as well which is not good. Best bet is to take BHT 350 mg once daily for 3 months and have liver enzymes checked before starting treatment and once every 3months. At times of prodrone double the dose to 1 350 mg pill every 12 hours until prodrone subsides spread hypericicum on genitals where tingle sensation is originated. Men can spread cream liberally over the shaft of penis lips where as women should only apply to labia majora, labia minora and lips only. Women should not apply cream inside vaginal canal.

Some people may need to take more BHT to stop outbreaks. BHT is a fat soluble so obese people will and by the way that is 60% of you reading this blog. You need to probably take more than 350 mg per day and in prodrone may need to triple the dose to 1050 mg per day. If you triple or double does it is best to check liver levels immediately. However everyone should start taking from the onset just 1 pill 350 mg every other day for a week to see if there are any adverse effects on your body such as rashes, heart palpatations, nausea, vomiting excessive bleeding. Women should be advised not to take any pills during first two days of menstruel cycle.

Lysine should be taken only after six months as it is a preventaive as well and interrupts the herpes virus machinary. The goal is to kill herpes and by interrupting the machinary you are allowing the virus to live, duplicate and hide effectively in the nerves. So you want all the hepres viruses to come out to play as much as possible so the BHT can kill them. Lysine will only damage them and they will retreat and duplicate and come to play in greater force another day.

Herpes appears to be able to respond to be called out to play as well. This can be done by lightly pricking the gential skin where herpes outbreak usually occurs with an instrument used for a tire patch, hair brush. It is also benfical for both men and women to shave pubic area as this will desensitize the herpes virus to breakouts over time and allow the hypericicum cream to work more effectively without being matted in pubic hair around the gentalia.

Consensus medicine i.e. allopathic does not recommend nor approve of BHT as a cure or prevention for herpes. Long story short there is no money to be made by pahrmaceutical companies or payoffs to FDA employees retiring from the FDA looking for a six firgure salary with a golden parachute attached as in the case of aspartmae approval by the FDA.

I ran across your blog and found it really interesting. I ordered BHT the other day. I was recently infected, just about three weeks ago. I am experiencing my first outbreak, which is to say the least, uncomfortable. I was wondering if anyone knew, how long it takes for the virus to retreat into the nevous system. I am hoping, by starting BHT treatment early enough, if I would be able to completely eradicate the virus since it has not been in my system too long. I have ordered about 4 months worth and plan on doing treatment longer if it seems to be helping for over a year. I guess we will see. Good luck!

I tried BHT myself over a year ago. I made sure to eat lots of olive oil/butter/animal fats, and drink plenty of fluids. I also took 500-1000mg vit C a day. I than went to an acupuncturist about a month after taking the BHT. I'm a bigger girl, so my dose was about 500mg/day. After this treatment I did not have an out break for an entire year!

BHT seems to basically "decode" the virus, so your immune system can recognize and elliminate the herpes virus. So it seems key to boost your immune system and avoid sugar. I only took the BHT for about a month, and had realy great results.

Also a note, if a person is thin/has a fast metabolism it is usefull to dissolve the BHT in a spoonfull of olive oil, otherwise it woln't be metabolized.

wait so if your are thin, put the capsule in a spoon full of olive oil,let it disolve and then take the spoon full of olive oil?

I contracted genital herpes around 1982. For over twenty years I did nothing and just did not have sex when I could tell it was coming. My first outbreak consisted of 5 small blisters and a typical outbreak is two small blisters, but I still have to go through the entire cylcle. Over a year ago I met the woman to whom I am now married. For some reason the last couple of years before I met her the outbreaks had become more common - it used to be once or twice a year. Actually, now I am pretty sure that the reason my outbreaks increased was because I was taking a lot of creatine and protein at the time. If you are not aware of this, Creatine is very high in Arginine which is like a delicacy for the herpes virus. Anyway, I decided to start taking something to protect her - I took Acyclovir twice daily for a year and then started taking Valtrex...I began to have a lot of joint pain and I noticed if I missed even a couple of days the symptoms would begin. That is when I found an article about using BHT along with hypericin and/or licorice root (Glycyrhizinic acid).
I downloaded the information for $14. You can buy Hypericin 3% and GA extract 20% from The Vitamin Shoppe in Bulk. For 6 to 8 weeks I ramped using two heaping (1/4tsp) twice daily of each and two level (1/8tsp) of bulk BHT powder each day. 1/8 tsp is about 500mg. After that period I had a mild outbreak - since then (a couple more months now) I have discontinued the Hypericin (because I like to jog in the sun and it is controversial just how synergistic it is with BHT) I now am taking three DGL Extract 3% GA twice daily (33mg GA X 2) along with the same 1/8tsp of BHT twice daily. The BHT is much cheaper in bulk, but it makes your teeth feel a bit funny for a few minutes. The reason I have cut back on the GA is because it is not recommended for extended periods in high doses. While ramping I was taking about 400 mg of pure GA daily from the 20% extract powder). The DGL Extract in 11g of GA/tab are also available from the Vitamin Shoppe. All this information is srtraight from the literature I purchased, only the author cut back to one gram (3X350mg tabs) of BHT and only three of the 11mg GA wafers each night before bed. Now he ramped once for six weeks then cut back like I just described and had one outbreak after 19 months. At the time that I read the article about 5 months ago, he had ramped again and then settled into the 1g BHT 33mg GA daily again. The GA might actually destroy the virus. BHT will hold it back, but the GA from the licorice root has actually killed the virus in some tests. So - I have not tested this long enough to give any more concrete evidence, but this is what I am doing for now. Please do some research before using the GA extract - It may not be good if you have high blood pressure. I have not personally experienced any side effects and I continue to take 66mg of pure GA daily - but I also do not have HBP. If you have any questions, I will try to be of assistance.

I have been taking 500mg BHT and 33mg Glycyrrhizinic acid twice daily and after four months I realize today that I am having a breakout - the scary thing is that I have not had the usual warning signs - pain, sensitivity, frequent urination, etc. I will increase my dosage twofold for about five days - I have a feeling that it will pass quickly. Oh well, it appears I have not found the cure, but four months is not bad - I really don't want to take Valtrex.
Even though BHT is a chemical, I have read only good things about it - provided you don't corrupt your liver. I don't drink and I drink lots of water and kombucha to keep my liver clean. I will write soon with the outcome of this episode I am about to endure.
