How does BHT work?!

I’ve been rattling on for the past few months about the success that I’ve had with BHT in controlling my cold sore outbreaks, yet I haven’t fully explained what BHT is and exactly how it works against this herpes virus.

BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoleune) is a synthetically made antioxidant, it was approved by the FDA as a preservative for food only.

How does BHT work?
It is believed that BHT works by interfering with the viruses’ lipid protein; this is a “shield” that protects the virus from your immune system, hence making it very difficult to defeat. Once this shield is gone, the virus is easily destroyed, so BHT doesn’t directly destroy the virus, it enables your immune system to do this.

Using BHT to help curb herpes outbreaks first become popular with the book “Wipe out herpes with BHT” written by Man and Fawkes and this was way back in the 80’s.

Studies have shown that BHT can inactivate the herpes virus in lab conditions, and to this day no formal experiments have been done on humans to test the benefits of using BHT. BHT is suspected of being able to inactivate viruses, from Newcastles disease which affects chickens, to HIV in humans.

Why has nothing come of it?
Each day I get more and more angry as to why this compound isn’t being tested, it is cheap, affordable, and readily available and if it has some effect on even just HSV (which I am living proof of) why is it not being used? But instead of asking why, we can only create awareness!

I think simply because BHT has been approved as a preservative and cannot be used as anything else. Secondly it cannot be patented, and sadly in the world of medicine, cures don’t make money, on going treatment does.

I have now just purchased some BHT and will join your experiment. I am suffering far too much with coldsores, and have been in tears many times in doctors clinics asking for help, trying every different "remedy" known, anything is worth a try. B.

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with cold sores, I feel your pain. It's terrible that people have to go through this when there's a readily available solution to manage it.

Cold sores don't only effect you physically, they are not just some painful blister on your on your lip. They can effect you very emotionally, knocking your self esteem to an all low.

Here's wishing you the best of luck! Let me know how it goes!

I have genital warts/HPV and I've been taking 1 350mg capsule of BHT a day with 1000mg of fish oils for about a week. So far it hasn't been long enough to tell if it's working or not. Just before I started on the BHT I got my warts removed and haven't seen any new ones appear yet. Will give another update in a week or two. I was originally planning on using the St. John Wort with the BHT as I read it aids with the killing of viruses but I haven't done so. Any advise as if I should or shouldn't introduce the St John's Wort?

Hi Scientist

I don't have any experience with HPV, but I have read reports that BHT can be effective on it, there is however very little information on it.

What I usually suggest is start off with BHT, if you still continue to have outbreaks, instead of increasing the BHT, you can supplement with Selenium (St Johns Wort). This way you are more able to tell which is working.

Please let me know how it goes, I'm very interested to see the effectiveness BHT has on other viruses!

Best of luck!

Lucky,

Good luck to you with this experiment.

I am curious about the dose you've been using. The manufacturer you link to sells 250 mg capsules, not the 350 mg dose you've used. Interestingly, a 500 mg dose is out of stock.

While it may be incredibly difficult to get a pharmaceutical company to fund research for developing BHT as a drug, it's a bit of a moot point. Assuming that you can get the word out effectively and target groups most interested in managing their outbreaks, usage will increase. This will capture the attention of the health care community and could lead to studies with people who are already using the product. If studies demonstrate effectiveness, there should be no problem eliciting the interest of more manufacturers to produce quality-grade BHT as a health "food" product. In the United States, many such products are marketed under the DHSEA, and although many have questionable acceptance among conventional practitioners, others, such as Fish Oil for example, have come to be accepted and encouraged among cardiologists. Of course, this might be complicated by concerns over the compound's possible toxicity - but that seems ridiculous given its widespread use as a food preservative.

In any event, please feel free to respond back, as I will be checking into your site and am interested in seeing what sort of real-life progress might be made with this. HSV affects/afflicts an immense number of people despite the fact that there has been little progress in finding cures or vaccines for the problems associated with it. I have a strong educational background and training in both basic and clinical sciences and would be interested in providing feedback to and eliciting information or support from others in the health community regarding what can be found out about BHT and any promise it might hold as a therapy.

I have been using BHT to control Herpes since 1986 when I first read about it in a book by Dirk Pearson and Sandy Shaw. I can state that I have helped many hundreds of people eliminate their herpes symptoms over the years. I believe it may also be helpful in cases of shingles, which is also a virus similiar to herpes , but have no personal experience with it; just three people who I recommended that they take BHT and it certainly helped them.
In my own case, as long as I take the BHT, I have no outbreaks and that is for the last 22 years. BHT has a long half life, so you can go for some period of time without taking any. When I do this, it just takes starting on the program again to stop the cold sores in their tracks.
Good luck in your experiment.

I read your introduction, it stated that to cure you need over 1000mg per day, do you have a link to that?Doesn't that amount damage the liver? do you mix the pills in oil or fat?
Did you have a small early breakout? Then the symptoms subsided? About how long before one should see results?

Good luck

Hi everyone.

About the dosage I'm taking, I did mention I switched from 350mg, too 250mg about a month and a bit ago, when I went with House of Nutrition.

You mentioned the 500g was out of stock. I was also interested in buying in bulk, but in the end BHT is so cheap, paying a little more capsules and piece of mind nowing you taking the correct dosage is much more important.

It would be great to see more manufacturers creating quality grade BHT. But I think because BHT receiving such a bad rap and stigma associated with it. Toxicology reporting negative findings although the dosages used on these lab animals are over 100 times more then what someone would take to curb their outbreaks. Also the fact that BHT is a preservative doesn't bid to well for it either with all these organic and natural products. But I'm sure we well get there :)

Any questions you need answered please feel free to email me.

To Bruinbrn,

That is great news to hear! 22 years with no outbreaks, that is incredible. I am for one starting to believe that BHT can actually make that possible. It's such a great feeling waking up in the morning not even have to wonder if there's something there.

To the last question, I would suggest taking lower dosages and work your way up if the outbreaks aren't being suppressed. Higher dosages could lead to liver damage, tests done on lab animals prove this but on dosages much higher then one should ever take.

I started taking BHT just after my last outbreak healed, and I haven't had another one since. Many people have reported they have had outbreaks, although they have been much less noticeable and the duration was much shorter. I don't dissolve the BHT in oil or fat, but I do make sure that my diet includes a few healthy fats such as omega fatty acids.

Where do you get the pharmaceutical grade BHT in the U.S.A. I am looking to try to use if for shingles.

I started taking BHT a few months back. I ended up on travel for work and didn't pack enough and got a coldsore. I was bummed, but started taking a higher dose and so far, it has progressed so much faster than before that it may take only about a week to heal completely whereas I was waiting two weeks or more for it to heal. was taking 350 mg a day, thinking about trying twice daily to suppress the outbreaks. I do think there is something to taking BHT though. Thanks so much for your blog and the information.

Hi Lucky,

I am happy to hear of you finding an effective remedy for cold sores.

I am newly infected, and I am in my search for an alternative to the standard medicines, which I believe will lead to ill-effects in the long-term, such as drug-resistance.

So, of course, I will be trying BHT, as soon as I am able to get my hands on some. Thanks for the information and the link to House of Nutrition.

In the meantime, I would like also to inform you that there is another herbal remedy. My search has pointed to Prunella Vulgaris. I have just started using it as a drink and a wash.

According to some of the web pages I read, Prunella is effective against both HSV1 and HSV2.

Prunella is normally sold in dry form, and is relatively cheap. Where I am at, its selling at the equivalent of less than USD0.80 for 75gm. That is enough for a day.

So far, I have used it for 2 days, so it is still too early for me to report how effective it is.

hi - I stumbled across your blog and am quite interested in hearing a more recent update from you. I was diagnosed with GHV1 in January and while I suspect I've had this for awhile, the OBs have been nonstop since that time - tried Valtrex - did nothing - switched to Famvir, which has helped with the prodromes but have had three OBs in three weeks, so clearly it's not helping either. Take lysine and oil of oregano. Lysine has done nothing and just started the oregano so too soon to tell... thinking about stopping all supplements and trying to BHT but somewhat worried about side effects. However, these OBs are killing me - haven't gone more than a week without one in months. Are you still taking BHT at 250mg/day and are you still OB free? Any side effects to note? Love the blog, please update as you can!

I would really like to read Man and Fawkes' book, "Wipe Out Herpes with BHT", but I honestly cannot find a copy of it anywhere. Do you know of any places that would have a copy?
