My experiences with BHT

This is a response to a comment that I received, asking about the experiences I have had prior to my "experiment" and during it.

During last year, I started experiencing the worst cold sore outbreaks I had in my entire life, which I attribute mainly to the stress I was under at the time. These constant outbreaks lead me to looking for other ways to try and control my outbreaks.

In the beginning during the initial stages of an outbreak, I would do the following:

  • Apply Acyclovir or a generic topical cream very liberally
  • Use ice to try and keep the swelling down
  • I would even take anti-inflammatories which I thought helped some what
  • To dry out the cold sore I would use hydrogen or spirits, which caused a lot of pain
  • Other things that I have tried, is coconut oil, garlic, various other creams, and the list goes on and on

All of these remedies offered very little and most likely no relief in my battle with cold sores.

Finally, I came across someone stating that BHT might be the new "cure" for Herpes on Earth Clinic after reading many methods people use to curb their attacks, most of them which I have tried. I researched extensively about BHT and its side effects, a lot of it not being too positive. I then spent the next few months trying to find distributors of BHT, for some reason I had it in my head that I had to buy in bulk, as no one here sells it in capsule form, or in small quantities. To buy it in bulk I would have had to buy a minimum of 25 kilograms (55 pounds), which at the rate I'm going now that would last almost 20 years!

After having no luck with local distributors, and luckily so, I found out that almost all of the BHT imported here comes from China, and even though it's been labeled as food grade, I have been warned not to use it as such and only use it for industrial purposes. So don't even think of going the bulk route, your health is way more important then the small saving you'll get.

I managed to find a supplier in the states, and it's been history ever since. I haven't had an outbreak in almost 4 months! Yes, some people only have one outbreak in a year. I tend to get outbreaks when I am stressed, and with last year being a very stressful time, cold sores seemed to be a permanent feature on my face, making me very depressed and selfconsious. But I'm glad to say, I've been through two very stressful times while on BHT, being retrenched, and moving to a new location, and did not receive one outbreak! I was even stressing about the stress I was under, and starting a new job with a cold sore would have just shattered my confidence.

There is very little to report with the side effects I have had with BHT, other then me not having any outbreaks. I can say my mood has improved drastically, as I don't get paranoid about getting cold sores anymore. I actually feel normal! When ever I did have an outbreak, and I'm sure others have felt the same, I feel kind of sub-human, it felt like people were looking at me in disgust. I would never wish cold sores on my worst enemy.

Lastly, just some information on my physical attributes so you can judge how BHT may effect you. I'm 1.78m's (5'9") tall, and weigh 82kg's (180 pounds), my body fat percentage is sitting at around 15%. I'm also asthmatic and I've read reports that BHT can induce an asthma attack, I however have never experienced this, but please keep that in mind. My dosage of BHT has is now at 250mg's.

I don't want to say it but I think BHT is the best bet at getting back at this virus, so if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me, I love answering your emails. It makes me so happy to help people with this at its best extremely irritating problem. :)

Almost forgot! HAPPY VALENTINES EVERYONE!

thanks. glad to hear this has gone so well. I started very recently and was curious what things had been like prior to your starting. stress is a major factor here too! Hoping for both of our sakes that this is as good as it seems.

Did you ever have cold sores that lasted only a day or so? I have been getting little things that I tend to think are cold sores, but they have lasted at max 3 days. Sadly though, I had one pop up yesterday despite BHT. I haven't been using it long though, and I suppose it is best to get the virus out in the open while using the stuff.

Hi Anonymous,

Sorry to hear about your breakout, from what I gather they seem to be lasting much shorter? I have had sensations in my lip as though I was getting one, but nothing has ever formed, and so I just put that down as paranoia :)

Some people have reported that they've had an outbreak early on, but it usually never lasted as long as if they were not on BHT.

What dosage are you taking, and what is your body fat percentage? If you do find that you are still getting outbreaks, instead of upping your BHT you can supplement with Hypercin (St Johns Wort), I was going to start supplementing with that if I had outbreaks.

Hi. Thank you for sharing your story. BHT has been good to me as well. I had a some HORRIBLE outbreaks about 2 1/2 years ago. I read about and then tried BHT-and they stopped. I stopped takinf BHT about a year ago-and I haven't had an outbreak! I've had MAJOR stess as well like getting married getting sick and sadly having a miscarriage. Still there has been no sign. Until!! two days ago. I had pnemonia a few weeks back and a cuople days ago I had that old feeling that it was around. I took some BHT and I had a weird reaction-I think. I felt slightly panic stricken. Nervous. spacey..It was scary. So I stopped taking them. I'm afraid an outbreak is still lingering. I'm thinking I'll take a smaller dose? What do you think of all this? Have you heard of negative reactions? Or was I just trippin? Let me know if you could.
Thanks again!!

So I am definitely frustrated. I have had two or three small outbreaks since starting. Granted, they have been small, but I was really hoping for nothing. I am under tremendous stress in my job, which is a big contributor, but obviously these have added further to said stress. I resorted to the valtrex that I have to put them away. I have been going between 250mg and 500mg at 180lbs and maybe 14% body fat (maybe less). I really hate these stupid things and never even had a problem with them until a year ago. I really just wanted a silver bullet :) Lucky, do the aforementioned people generally find that they only have an outbreak early on? Anon, what made you think it was back again?

i will posit that this may be how bht proves effective. granted, I truly do not know enough to make any claims, but I would like to see what people's opinions on this are, as I haven't seen too much about what effects the latent load. BHT apparently has the ability in-vivo to kill the virus. It would be nice if there were more studies on that, but it does appear to be at least likely to be true. The tricky thing about hsv is that it encodes a microRNA strand that prevents cell death when the virus replicates. This is why it hangs out in the neurons so well. When there is a reactivation, is most likely that the virus is not perfectly able to prevent cell death (I do believe I have seen this somewhere). This would hellp to explain why recurrences are generally less frequent as time goes on. BHT, by preventing the virus from causing more sore or reducing them significantly helps to prevent the virus from establishing latency in new neurons. therefore, every time the virus is reactivated while using bht (or bht and antivirals in my case at the moment) more neurons with latent virus die than uninfected neurons become infected. Normally, the virus would estabish new latencies with ever reactivation. There is a "paper" here that described this methodology something like 10 years ago, and it make some sense. Any thoughts? Granted this is total conjecture on my part, but I tend to be pretty persistant when confronted with things people tell me can't be changed.

looks like I screwed up that link:

One more thought. It might make sense to mix a capsule of bht in with your carmex. Being fat soluble, it appears to mix rather nicely in small amounts. Might do the dual-duty of keeping the virus from living in your lip balm and killing any local particles.

Wouldn't you think getting a blood test every few months is a good idea? I mean, it can let you know if your antibody count is decreasing which is a good thing

Hi guys, thanks for all the responses! Sorry that I'm replying so late, been hectically busy.

To anonymous with negative reactions, it's weird that it has happened only the second time round. Where you taking anything else in conjunction with the BHT, antibiotics etc? But otherwise, as Adam said, practice caution.

To frustrated, sorry to hear about your outbreaks. BHT wont effect everyone in the same way, there are a lot of factors which influence its effect such as your BMI, diet, and then obviously the other factors which can trigger an outbreak such as stress, low immune system, etc. Comming off Valtrex, can very likely result in an outbreak as well. Your cold sores, being smaller and less severe is an excellent indicator that the BHT is working. What dosage are you taking? Are you on a low fat diet? Including Hypercin (St. Johns Wort) can increase the effectivness of BHT without you having to increase your BHT dosage.

To Adam, thanks for the support. Very much appreciated. Glad you having great results with BHT!

To "J" a good dose of skepticism is always good. That's what my aim is with this blog, to get enough awareness out there, so that people higher up take notice, and hopefully start getting proper trials done.

To the last Anonymous, that would be an excellent idea, I was tested a while back but the tests that where done could only confirm if I had the virus or not. They didn't count the antibodies.

Best regards to everyone!

I've been using BHT for 20 some-odd years and the stuff is great. As I understand it, it is not only a food preservative, but also an antioxidant - my mother swears it preserves us as well!
I don't take it regularly, but as soon as I feel a cold sore coming on I take some and nothing ever manifests.
Apparently folks who fly lots are extremely susceptible to cold sores which is how I got it - from my son after he'd been on flights back from his fathers home.
Works for me!

I get my BHT from House of Nutrition. I've ordered from other places like VRP, but so far House of Nutrition have been the best, and a complete pleasure to deal with.
